Summary
This capstone course integrates the knowledge and skills developed throughout the Matheson Certified Ergonomic Evaluation Specialist (CEES) pathway into full professional industrial ergonomic practice. Rather than introducing new assessment tools or intervention techniques, the course challenges participants to apply previously learned concepts within realistic, unsignaled industrial scenarios that require judgment from referral and intake through assessment, recommendation development, implementation planning, documentation, communication, and follow-up.
Participants learn to bring together the exposure-capacity framework, biopsychosocial reasoning, Job Demands Analysis, injury-data interpretation, industrial ergonomic assessment, control selection, worker engagement, and program-level considerations within a single case. The course emphasizes recognizing which body of knowledge is most relevant at each stage of an assessment rather than applying every tool or concept to every situation.
The course applies the three-tier industrial ergonomic assessment framework, including worker self-assessment, targeted professional assessment, and comprehensive job or worksite assessment. Participants determine the appropriate depth and scope of an evaluation based on the referral question, identified concerns, job demands, available information, and level of risk rather than defaulting to a comprehensive assessment in every case.
Case-based instruction develops judgment in worker interviewing, job-demand analysis, observation of variable industrial work, selection and interpretation of ergonomic assessment tools, and identification of primary exposure drivers. Participants also learn to recognize when an apparently straightforward ergonomic concern is influenced by production demands, work organization, psychosocial factors, worker variability, or broader organizational conditions.
The course emphasizes development of evidence-based, feasible, and appropriately sequenced recommendations that address the primary drivers identified during the assessment. Participants determine when engineering controls, administrative controls, work-practice strategies, worker education, or combinations of interventions are appropriate. Recommendations are evaluated for feasibility, worker acceptance, operational impact, implementation requirements, and the need for follow-up to determine whether exposure was actually reduced.
Particular attention is given to professional documentation and communication. Participants produce defensible records that connect the referral purpose, observations, job demands, assessment findings, interpretation, recommendations, and follow-up. Documentation expectations vary according to the scope and purpose of the assessment, from targeted evaluations to comprehensive industrial ergonomic reports and broader worksite initiatives.
Throughout the course, participants work through realistic industrial ergonomic cases without being told in advance what the primary issue will be. Some cases involve straightforward workstation or material-handling concerns, while others require recognition of psychosocial contributors, production-system constraints, worker engagement issues, implementation barriers, injury trends, or program-level concerns. The goal is to develop the ability to recognize what kind of ergonomic problem is actually present and respond appropriately rather than simply completing a predetermined assessment process.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

- Incorporate worker participation, operational requirements, feasibility, and implementation considerations when developing ergonomic solutions.
- Recognize when individual ergonomic findings indicate broader production, organizational, psychosocial, or ergonomics-program concerns requiring escalation or a systems-level response.
- Produce a defensible professional record connecting referral purpose, observations, job demands, assessment findings, reasoning, recommendations, implementation considerations, and follow-up.
