Summary
This course provides a comprehensive, evidence-informed framework for the planning, administration, interpretation, and documentation of Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs). Emphasis is placed on clinical reasoning, objective performance measurement, safety, reliability, validity, and defensible decision-making related to an individual's functional abilities and work capacity.
Participants will examine the complete FCE process, from referral analysis, medical record review, intake, and evaluation planning through physical testing, work simulation, interpretation, documentation, and recommendations. Rather than approaching the FCE as a fixed battery of tests, the course develops the clinician's ability to determine what evidence is needed to answer the referral question and to adapt the evaluation based on information obtained throughout testing.
Content addresses assessment of pain and disability reports, physical effort, musculoskeletal function, dexterity, mobility, positional tolerances, cardiorespiratory endurance, material handling, and job-specific work demands. Participants learn to integrate multiple sources of evidence, including objective measurements, clinical observations, self-report, performance consistency, physiological response, and job-demand information, rather than relying on any single test result when forming conclusions.
Special attention is given to distinguishing demonstrated functional capacity from broader conclusions regarding work ability and disability, evaluating the consistency and reliability of performance, recognizing precautions and contraindications, and identifying the limitations and uncertainty associated with FCE findings. The course also emphasizes the appropriate use of clinical judgment when modifying testing and the importance of remaining within professional scope of practice.
Through structured protocols, case-based clinical reasoning, work simulation, and applied documentation activities, participants will develop the skills necessary to conduct systematic, safe, and clinically reasoned FCEs and communicate findings through clear, work-relevant, and defensible reports and recommendations.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the purpose, components, and clinical reasoning underlying a comprehensive Functional Capacity Evaluation.
- Determine when an FCE is appropriate and identify relevant precautions, contraindications, and safety considerations.
- Gather and integrate medical, occupational, job-demand, and self-reported information to guide the evaluation.
- Select and administer appropriate standardized and functional assessment procedures according to established protocols.
- Evaluate an individual's ability to perform essential physical work demands, including material handling, positional tolerances, mobility, strength, and endurance.
- Monitor symptoms, physiological responses, movement quality, compensations, and performance throughout testing and modify the evaluation when clinically appropriate.
- Compare demonstrated functional abilities with the physical demands of a job or occupational goal.

- Interpret FCE findings to identify functional abilities, limitations, and appropriate work-related recommendations.
- Apply clinical judgment to adapt the evaluation based on the individual's presentation and information obtained throughout testing.
- Document findings clearly and develop conclusions that are supported by objective findings, clinical observations, and the overall pattern of performance.
- Communicate FCE results in a clear, professional, and defensible manner to appropriate stakeholders.

- Applied discussion is integrated throughout the three-day program to reinforce the development of the Matheson-Trained Thinking Evaluator. Discussion focuses on how the evaluator integrates multiple sources of evidence, responds to findings as they emerge, and makes safe, clinically reasoned, and defensible decisions throughout the FCE.
