Functional Capacity Evaluation Training & Certification

Matheson teaches clinicians to plan, run, and interpret functional capacity evaluations that hold up: objective measures of what a person can safely do, with reasoning clear enough to defend in a workers' compensation claim, a disability dispute, or a legal proceeding. Training starts with the three-day FCE course, the course behind the CWCE credential, and continues into cognitive FCE and advanced practice.

Where to start

Start with the FCE course, then go further

The Functional Capacity Evaluation course is the core of Matheson FCE training and the course behind the Certified Work Capacity Evaluator credential. Two more courses build on it.

The core course

Functional Capacity Evaluation

Three days on the full evaluation: planning and intake, the reliability of pain and disability reports, physical effort, musculoskeletal screening, dexterity, mobility, endurance, material handling, and work simulation, through to documentation and recommendations.

  • Length21 hours
  • CE credits2.1 CEUs
  • FormatIn person or live stream

Next step

Cognitive Functional Capacity Evaluation

Learn a systematic approach to evaluating functional cognition, behavior, and work capacity for individuals with acquired brain injury, mental health conditions, and other cognitive challenges.

  • Length14 hours
  • CE credits1.4 CEUs

  • PrerequisiteCompletion of formal Functional Capacity Evaluation training.

Next step

Advanced Concepts in Functional Capacity Evaluations

  • CE credits1.4 CEUs
  • FormatIn person
  • PrerequisiteCompletion of formal Functional Capacity Evaluation training and practical experience conducting or interpreting FCEs.

Trained in FCE somewhere else? You don't start over.

Both of these higher level FCE courses accept formal FCE training from another program, so you can take them without repeating the core course first. However, you will hear our philosophy on assessments and testing which is core to our beliefs on creating defensible thinking evaluators.

Certification

Earning the CWCE

The Certified Work Capacity Evaluator credential is earned, not given. The course is the first step; the credential comes from showing that your own evaluations meet the standard.

  1. Complete the FCE course

Three days of training, in person or live stream.

  2. Submit your reports

Submit 10 FCE reports from your own practice, with all patient information removed.

  3. Instructor review

Two are selected and reviewed by a Matheson instructor against Matheson credentialing criteria.

  4. Earn and keep it

Reports that show a high level of knowledge and quality earn the CWCE. It is valid for 3 years, and recertification follows the same process.

Who it's for

Who is FCE training for?

Clinicians who evaluate what people can do at work, and whose findings others rely on.

  • Physical therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Athletic trainers
  • Kinesiologists
  • Chiropractors
  • Other healthcare professionals

Certification requirements are set out on the CWCE page. Refer patients for FCEs or rely on the results? The FCE guide explains what an evaluation involves and what to expect from one.

Evaluations that hold up

An FCE is only as useful as the decisions it supports. Matheson training prepares you to measure what matters, explain your reasoning, and write findings that others can rely on.
