Summary
This capstone course integrates the knowledge and skills developed throughout the Matheson Ergonomics Certification Series into full professional office ergonomic practice. Rather than introducing new assessment tools or intervention techniques, the course challenges participants to apply previously learned concepts within realistic, unsignaled cases that require judgment from referral and intake through assessment, recommendation development, documentation, communication, and follow-up.
Participants learn to bring together the exposure-capacity framework, biopsychosocial reasoning, Job Demands Analysis, injury-data interpretation, and the structured office ergonomic assessment process within a single case. The course emphasizes recognizing which body of knowledge is most relevant at each stage of an assessment rather than applying every tool or concept to every worker.
The course applies the tiered office ergonomic assessment model, comprehensive assessment sequence, virtual and hybrid assessment methodology, and structured assessment tools previously developed in the Office Ergonomic Risk Assessment and Analysis course. Participants are expected to select assessment methods based on the referral, worker presentation, job demands, and level of risk rather than using a standardized checklist approach.
Case-based instruction develops judgment in worker interviewing, job-demand analysis, workstation observation, interpretation of reported symptoms, assessment-tool selection, convergence-based prioritization, and identification of primary exposure drivers. Participants also learn to recognize when psychosocial factors, accommodation issues, clinical restrictions, organizational conditions, or broader injury patterns change the nature of what initially appears to be a straightforward workstation assessment.
The course emphasizes development of evidence-based, feasible, and appropriately sequenced recommendations that address the primary drivers identified during the assessment. Participants learn to distinguish ergonomic recommendations from body mechanics or individualized clinical treatment and to consider implementation barriers, worker adoption, organizational constraints, and the need for escalation when a workstation-level intervention alone is insufficient.
Particular attention is given to professional documentation and communication. Participants learn to produce defensible records that connect referral purpose, observations, worker reports, job demands, assessment findings, professional reasoning, recommendations, and follow-up. Documentation expectations vary according to the context of the referral, including routine screenings, formal complaints, accommodation requests, return-to-work cases, and situations involving multiple organizational stakeholders.
Throughout the course, participants work through realistic office ergonomic cases without being told in advance what the primary issue will be. Some cases involve straightforward workstation configuration, while others require recognition of psychosocial contributors, job-demand mismatches, accommodation considerations, or patterns that warrant broader organizational escalation. The goal is to develop the ability to recognize what kind of case is actually present and respond appropriately rather than simply completing a workstation inspection.

- Applied discussion is integrated throughout the course using realistic office ergonomic cases. Participants practice determining what kind of case is actually present, selecting the information and assessment methods needed, interpreting competing findings, and deciding when workstation modification is sufficient versus when broader workplace, psychosocial, accommodation, or clinical considerations require attention.
- Assessment is case-based and requires participants to integrate previously learned office ergonomics concepts rather than demonstrate isolated tool knowledge. Participants evaluate referrals, select appropriate assessment approaches, interpret findings, develop and prioritize recommendations, and produce professional documentation that supports their reasoning and conclusions.
- The Office Ergonomics: Applied Professional Practice Course Manual, course case materials and worksheets, office ergonomic assessment tools and supporting resources from prerequisite coursework, course presentations, and writing materials or an electronic device for assessment and documentation exercises are required. On-demand and live-stream participants will also need reliable internet access and a device capable of accessing the course platform.
- Clinical and ergonomic reasoning is reinforced by presenting realistic cases without signaling the primary problem or preferred assessment method in advance. Participants must determine which information matters, select appropriate methods, recognize when physical and psychosocial findings interact, identify the primary drivers of the case, and develop recommendations that are defensible, feasible, and appropriate to professional scope.
