Summary
This course provides an evidence-informed framework for understanding how psychosocial factors influence workplace injury, pain, recovery, disability, and return to work. Emphasis is placed on the biopsychosocial model and the interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors that can either support recovery or contribute to prolonged disability.
Participants will examine the difference between biomedical and biopsychosocial approaches to workplace injury and learn how the three domains of the biopsychosocial model interact over time. The course introduces the disability cycle and demonstrates how fear, avoidance, deconditioning, workplace stressors, communication, and organizational response can reinforce one another and alter the course of recovery.
Content addresses six key psychosocial factors with strong relevance to workplace injury and return-to-work outcomes: fear avoidance, pain catastrophizing, self-efficacy, recovery expectations, job demands and control, and perceived injustice. Participants learn how these factors influence pain experience, behavior, rehabilitation participation, work absence, and recovery expectations, and how multiple factors may interact to increase or reduce disability risk.
Special attention is given to the recognition of psychosocial risk across professional roles. Participants learn to distinguish red flags from psychosocial yellow flags and are introduced to blue and black flags related to work perceptions and systemic barriers. The course reviews commonly used screening tools, including the Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire, Pain Catastrophizing Scale, STarT Back Screening Tool, and OSPRO-YF, while also emphasizing observational recognition of verbal, behavioral, and situational indicators of psychosocial risk.
The course also examines how communication can influence recovery expectations, perceived support, and psychosocial risk. Participants consider how clinicians, occupational health professionals, supervisors, human resources, safety professionals, and other members of the workplace injury team can recognize and respond to psychosocial concerns while remaining within their professional scope of practice.
The course concludes with an evidence-informed intervention framework emphasizing early, proportionate, and coordinated response. Participants are introduced to pain neuroscience education, graded exposure, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral principles, organizational support strategies, appropriate referral, and multidisciplinary return-to-work coordination.

- Applied discussion is integrated throughout the course using workplace injury and return-to-work scenarios. Participants practice recognizing psychosocial factors without assigning motivation or intent, distinguishing red and yellow flags, identifying workplace and systemic barriers, and determining when education, workplace support, referral, or multidisciplinary intervention is appropriate.
- Assessment includes knowledge checks and applied case scenarios requiring participants to identify biological, psychological, and social contributors to workplace injury and recovery, distinguish key psychosocial risk factors, recognize relevant warning signs, and select an appropriate early, proportionate, and coordinated response.
- The Psychosocial Factors in Work Injury and Recovery Course Manual, course workbook and case materials, course presentations and supporting instructional resources, and writing materials or an electronic device for documentation and case exercises are required. On-demand and live-stream participants will also need reliable internet access and a device capable of accessing the course platform. No specialized clinical or psychological testing equipment is required for this foundational course.
- Clinical reasoning is reinforced by asking participants to consider biological, psychological, social, and workplace factors together rather than interpreting pain or disability through a purely biomedical framework. Participants practice distinguishing observable behavior from assumptions about motivation, recognizing how psychosocial factors may interact and compound one another, and selecting responses that support recovery while remaining within professional scope.
