Summary

This course provides an evidence-informed framework for using workplace injury data to identify risk, recognize meaningful patterns, prioritize prevention opportunities, and support informed organizational decision-making. Emphasis is placed on moving beyond injury counts and compliance reporting to understand what injury metrics can reveal about where risk is developing and where prevention efforts may have the greatest impact.

Participants will examine common workplace injury metrics and learn to interpret them as signals rather than conclusions. Content includes OSHA recordable injuries, DART cases and rates, incident rates such as TRIR, workers' compensation information, and the Experience Modification Rate (MOD factor). Participants learn both the value and limitations of these measures and why individual metrics should not be interpreted in isolation.

The course introduces a practical progression from signals to patterns, patterns to insights, and insights to decisions. Participants learn to organize injury information by factors such as body part, job role, department, task, shift, and worker tenure to identify recurring patterns that may indicate underlying workplace exposure. Emphasis is placed on moving from simply counting what happened to understanding where and how risk is concentrated.

Content also addresses the importance of connecting injury patterns with how work is actually performed. Participants examine workplace exposure, worker feedback, task and process information, and other available data to determine whether an observed pattern represents an isolated event or a recurring condition that may continue if the underlying work remains unchanged.

Special attention is given to prioritizing prevention opportunities. Participants consider the frequency and severity of identified problems, the likelihood that the problem will continue, and the organization's ability to influence the underlying conditions. The course also examines how task design, equipment, work pace, staffing, and workflow may interact and why addressing a root system issue may improve multiple injury patterns simultaneously.

The course concludes by translating injury insights into practical prevention decisions. Participants learn to connect an identified problem with its likely cause, select appropriate opportunities for change, build a reasonable case for intervention, test changes through pilot implementation, and monitor injury trends and worker feedback to determine whether the intervention is producing the intended result.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on using data as a starting point for investigation rather than treating the numbers themselves as the answer. A complete case example integrates injury metrics, workplace exposure, prioritization, intervention selection, financial considerations, implementation, and follow-up to demonstrate how organizations can move systematically from injury signals to prevention action.

Chapter 1: What Injury Metrics Actually Represent (25–30 minutes)

Chapter 2: Finding Patterns That Matter (20–25 minutes)

Chapter 3: Why the Numbers Don't Tell the Whole Story (20–25 minutes)

  • Limitations of lagging indicators and the delayed effect of measures such as the MOD factor
  • Distinguishing patterns and correlations from confirmed causes
  • Validating suspected exposure through observation, job-demand review, and worker input
  • Prioritizing findings based on frequency, severity, likelihood to continue, and ability to influence
  • Applied activity: Compare competing injury patterns and determine which warrant priority for further investigation or prevention.
Chapter 4: Turning Decisions Into Action (25–30 minutes)
  • Moving from identified patterns and likely causes to practical prevention strategies

  • Considering operational feasibility and developing a practical and financial case for change

Chapter 5: Applying the Concepts - Scenarios (15–20 minutes)

Applied Discussion
  • Applied discussion is integrated throughout the course using workplace injury data and case scenarios. Participants practice interpreting metrics as signals, identifying meaningful patterns, determining what additional information is needed before assuming causation, prioritizing prevention opportunities, and connecting identified workplace exposures with practical interventions.
Course Assessment
  • Assessment includes knowledge checks and applied scenarios requiring participants to interpret common injury metrics, recognize meaningful patterns, investigate potential contributing factors, prioritize prevention opportunities, and translate findings into practical prevention decisions with appropriate measures for follow-up.
Required Materials
  • The Using Injury Data to Drive Prevention Course Manual, course worksheets and case materials, course presentations and supporting instructional resources, and writing materials or an electronic device for data interpretation and case exercises are required. A calculator or electronic calculation capability may be used for incident-rate exercises. On-demand and live-stream participants will also need reliable internet access and a device capable of accessing the course platform. No specialized clinical or ergonomic testing equipment is required for this foundational course.
Clinical Reasoning Reinforced Throughout the Course
  • Clinical and workplace reasoning is reinforced by asking participants to move beyond reporting injury numbers and determine what the available information may be signaling about the work. Participants integrate injury metrics, job demands, worker input, workplace observations, and organizational information to distinguish patterns from confirmed causes, prioritize opportunities for prevention, and determine whether interventions actually reduce the underlying exposure.
