Worksite Injury Solutions Capstone

This capstone course integrates the knowledge and skills developed throughout the Certified Worksite Injury Specialist (CWIS) pathway into realistic workplace injury prevention scenarios. Rather than introducing another individual intervention or program, participants learn to determine which strategies are appropriate for a workplace problem and how multiple approaches can be combined into a coordinated solution.

Participants work through cases that require integration of workplace injury mechanisms, psychosocial factors, Job Demands Analysis, and injury-data interpretation. These foundational concepts are used to determine what is occurring within the workplace, identify potential contributors, and establish priorities before selecting an intervention.

The course then challenges participants to determine when strategies such as early intervention and injury first aid, Post-Offer Employment Testing, new hire injury prevention, ergonomic intervention, worker education, or broader worksite programming are appropriate. Emphasis is placed on selecting interventions based on the identified problem rather than starting with a predetermined service or solution.

Participants consider the practical realities of implementing worksite injury solutions, including organizational priorities, worker needs, leadership support, available resources, communication, operational constraints, and stakeholder responsibilities. Cases require participants to balance these considerations while maintaining focus on worker outcomes and meaningful reduction of workplace injury risk.

The course also emphasizes measurement and continuous improvement. Participants use available workplace information to establish meaningful goals, determine how success will be measured, and identify when an intervention should be continued, modified, expanded, or discontinued.

Throughout the course, participants are challenged to think as worksite injury prevention specialists rather than providers of individual services. The goal is to develop the ability to recognize the problem, understand the work, use available data, select the appropriate intervention, engage the necessary stakeholders, and develop an integrated solution that can be implemented and evaluated in the real workplace.

Completion of the preceding Certified Worksite Injury Specialist (CWIS) pathway courses is recommended, including Workplace Injury Mechanisms & WMSDs, Psychosocial Factors in Work Injury and Recovery, Job Demands Analysis, Using Injury Data to Drive Prevention, Early Intervention & Injury First Aid, Post-Offer Employment Testing, Injury Prevention in New Hire Onboarding, and Worksite Program Design.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Integrate injury mechanisms, psychosocial factors, Job Demands Analysis, and workplace injury data to identify and prioritize worksite injury prevention needs.
• Analyze realistic workplace scenarios to determine the primary problem, contributing factors, and appropriate level of intervention.
• Select and integrate appropriate worksite strategies, including early intervention, employment testing, new hire initiatives, ergonomic intervention, worker education, and program-level solutions.
• Develop practical injury prevention solutions that consider worker needs, job demands, organizational priorities, operational constraints, and available resources.
• Identify the stakeholders, communication pathways, and responsibilities necessary to implement a coordinated worksite solution.
• Establish meaningful measures for evaluating intervention implementation, worker outcomes, and program effectiveness.
• Apply integrated clinical and organizational reasoning to determine when worksite injury prevention strategies should be continued, modified, expanded, or escalated.

Educational Methods:

Case-based instruction, realistic workplace scenarios, injury-data interpretation, Job Demands Analysis, intervention-selection exercises, stakeholder and implementation planning, program-development activities, group discussion, and integrated worksite injury prevention case exercises.
